20/20 Vision

Looking back to December, as we approached the new year of 2020 and a new decade, I prayed that God would grant me 20/20 vision – and not the physical type. What was most important in my life and how could I keep the focus on that? Of course, I had no idea that a pandemic would come our way – that overnight, life as we would know it would stop – and we would have the opportunity to develop 20/20 vision.

Recently, as I listened to Laura Story’s song “Blessings”, I was reminded of my prayer for 20/20 vision in 2020. She sings:

We pray for blessings We pray for peace Comfort for family, protection while we sleep We pray for healing, for prosperity We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering All the while, You hear each spoken need Yet love is way too much to give us lesser things

'Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops What if Your healing comes through tears What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise….

In Italy, people used the rainbow to symbolize the pandemic. My precious nephew, Simone, created this poster to hang on his balcony with the hope-filled rallying cry: ”all will be well”.

There is a silver lining in all of this pain and suffering and death – and perhaps a pot of gold, of life’s treasures.

Each of us has had the opportunity to truly develop 20/20 vision – to reflect on and recognize what truly matters. During the saty-at-home order, I’ve been reminded to keep my focus on:

· Health – at the very essence, the ability to breathe freely but more expansively, the importance of cultivating my health through the foods I eat, the ways I exercise my body and nurture my mind.

· Circles of love – with the concentric rings of people who touch me and whom I touch; the people whom I’ve been connecting with during this time – from my family to former colleagues and neighbors. Also, my loved ones who have gone before me yet whose spirits remain with me.

· Service – from helping my husband successfully work at home, my sons study at home, my parents shelter at home, to making masks, and showing up for a 75th drive-by party.

· Celebrating – I have learned the hard way, and am now reminded, that life can be short – and cut-short. So, I need to make the time to celebrate and to rejoice for what I have, while I can.

· Creativity – from celebrating a birthday to a very special graduate; from figuring out how to get groceries safely in my home to cooking dinners with limited cupboards night after night; from learning new skills like knitting to staying connected while distant.

· Generosity – from sending food to those on the frontline to sharing goods like yeast(!); from donating masks to sending encouraging cards.

· Time – with my family; time to slow down and focus, to remove the noise and clutter, as well as to limit the to-do lists to what truly matters.

· Time in my prayer corner – each morning, with a cup of coffee and Divine Love – sharing my joys and sorrows, my fears and hopes; being nourished for the day ahead, being blessed, being grateful.

· Gratitude – for waking up in my own beautiful, peaceful, safe, love-filled home, for health, for loved ones, for creativity, for being of service, for the gift of time, for knowing God’s love more intimately and being able to share it more abundantly

· For Divine Love who sustains us, who cries with us, who rejoices with us, who fills us with hope.

And so, my prayer for 20/20 vision, like so many others, has been answered in ways beyond my wildest imagination – giving me abundant opportunities to focus and refocus on what truly matters. And for that, I am most grateful!

The following Bible verse has become a mantra for me during this quarantine, helping me move from despair to hope! It is my prayer for YOU!

“May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in God so that you overflow with hope by the power of Divine Love” Rom 15:13

And I wonder…

What have you learned during this pandemic? How has your vision improved? How have you experienced Divine Love? Who has been an instrument of God’s healing love and grace for you?

May God bless you and keep you safe!
